Tis' the Season for Gravel What is gravel riding? Less traffic, lower average pace, and routes you wouldn't normally travel make gravel riding perfect for new or seasoned cyclists! A typical gravel ride in our area will consist of mixed gravel and paved surfaces. With many miles of gravel roads in Iredell County, you can link different route options of varying difficulty. Here is a great route to get you started, this month's featured photo at the bottom of the newsletter was taken on this route.
Do I need a gravel bike to ride gravel? As we love to say "any bike can be a gravel bike", so that old hybrid bike that's been sitting in the garage (and might need a tune-up from one of our pro mechanics) or your mountain bike can be a great gravel bike, but your road bike with 23mm tires might be a bit uncomfortable on bumpy roads as wider tires = more comfort. However, a true gravel bike has been optimized for long miles over mixed surfaces and if you find that you want to go farther and do more it is certainly worth considering moving into a dedicated gravel bike.
Come by our shop or check our website for route and gear recommendations and chat with our knowledgeable staff who will get you set up for success on any surface! |
